Intro to Isometric Architecture

Do you possess good digital painting and perspective skills but don’t yet have the advanced design knowledge and expertise required to create high-quality architecture designs? Do you dream of designing jaw-dropping buildings, structures, and cityscapes for games that enhance the storyline and amplify the visual experience? Top designers possess in-depth knowledge of various architectures, core design principles, and isometric drawing skills that enable them to masterfully craft stunning architectural structures designs for any style, setting, or game genre.

In this 10 week course, you will learn a powerful set of isometric drawing and visual development techniques from a top architectural concept designer and use them to generate professional-level designs from scratch for any video game, irrespective of the genre or style.

You will receive regular feedback from the instructor to help refine your architectural design creation process. You will gain proficiency in properly interpreting the design brief, gathering references, and establishing keyframes so you can design architectural structures that not only appear striking but also best convey the mood and theme of the game. You will learn to create a series of rough sketches in basic 2 point perspective to explore shape and design language, generate multiple design ideas and finalize the design direction that best suits the game’s setting and narrative. You will gain the knowledge required to identify, draw and refine additional details and structural elements in the correct perspective and proportion to your drawing so you can improve the readability of your design. In addition, you will also learn to manipulate additional design elements and details so you can generate visually appealing variations of your architectural design that satisfy any game level or environment. Finally, you will apply all you have learned to generate a production-ready polished architectural design deliverables package that meets industry standards.

By the end of this 10-week course, you will have a thorough understanding of a powerful set of drawing and design techniques that will improve your design thinking, creativity, and productivity. You will have developed the knowledge and ability to generate stunning genre and level-specific architectural structures and buildings from scratch in addition to having two brand new polished designs that can be developed into well-designed professional-level concepts for your portfolio.

Course Outline

*Please note that the following outline is subject to change slightly at the teacher's discretion.

Below is the general outline. The detailed 10-week course outline will be communicated to students at a later date.

Part 1: You will receive a design brief with architectural requirements for a specific setting or genre.

You will learn to interpret the brief, gather references and create sketches so you can explore architectural design options and finalize the one best suited for the requirements.

Through continuous feedback at every step of the process, you will gain the ability to properly set up the correct isometric perspective for the design, draw out all the structural elements, and add additional details that improves readability and best communicates the storyline.

You will also gain the skills required to add line weight, cast shadows, flat colours, polishing and any necessary text elements so you can take your design to the next level

Part 2: You will choose an unused building option from the design exploration process (in Part 1), gather specific references and learn how to best organize them so you can generate 3 distinct level variations for your design

You will learn to use different structures, materials and additional elements to manipulate your designs and make them specific to the level requirements so it is easily understandable and best communicates the game setting to the viewer

You will also learn how to polish and refine your variations and organize them in an appealing manner
