Intro to Isometric Architecture

In this advanced course, you will learn an effective set of isometric drawing skills and visual development concepts to generate high-quality designs in any visual style. striking but also best convey the mood and theme of the game.

Over the term, your instructor will show you how to properly interpret a design brief, gather references, and establish keyframes so you can smoothly navigate the creation process. After creating rough sketches in basic 2-point perspective, you will learn to generate multiple ideas and use shape design and auxiliary architectural elements to develop a visual style that suits your concept's setting all the while improving the readability of your image.

By the end of this course, you will have gained a thorough understanding of the architectural design process and be able to efficiently bring your visions to life. What's more, you'll also have made your very own stunning interior environment concept that will be ready to add to your portfolio!

Class Timings: Tuesdays from 3 PM to 6 PM, Eastern Savings Time (EST or UTC-5h)

Date of first class: January 7th

Duration: 10 weeks

 

Please note that our classes times are listed as EST (GMT-5) but that starting on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, all class times will go into EDT (GMT-4)

If you are unable to attend the class during the times listed above, you will still have access to video recordings of the class lectures and will still receive personalized feedback from your instructor.

It should be noted that students should set aside a minimum of 3 hours per week to complete assignments for this class. Students may even require a bit more time (4-5 hours per week) depending on how quickly they can work through assignments.

 

*Please note that this class' duration is subject to change (to either 1.5 hours or 2 hours) depending on the number of enrolled students.

These shorter class formats (offered up to a maximum of 6 students for the 2-hour format) are conducted with more of a personalized mentorship style, allowing students to have more time devoted to their assignments' critiques and the ability to ask more questions in class, while still maintaining all of the theory and planned curriculum for the regular class length.

Language and age requirements

You should have at least intermediate level English to take this class. Please be advised that there could be artistic nudity in our classes. Students should be 14 years old to enroll.

Required Materials

Material List: 

  • A desktop computer or laptop with Photoshop installed*
  • A  graphic tablet with pressure sensitivity (from brands such as Wacom, Huion, or Xencelabs), OR a tablet-laptop hybrid (also with Photoshop installed) with pressure sensitivity (such as the Wacom Cintiq Companion or Microsoft Surface Pro).

 

Important note: 

 

Please note that the vast majority of our digital classes are taught using Adobe Photoshop and that this is also the recommended program for students to use. You may consult our FAQ for more information on other software which may be potentially used for class, however, please note that no technical assistance will be provided by instructors on the use of alternative painting software as they may not be familiar with the program.

 

Please ensure that all of your hardware and software are functioning properly before the start of the term; there will not be any time to resolve technical issues in class.

Tech Requirements for Attending Syn Studio Online Classes

  • A strong uninterrupted broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) connection with a minimum 600kbps bandwidth (up/down).
  • A Laptop/Desktop computer equipped with a single core processor (at least 1 GHZ processing speed) or a smartphone/tablet with equivalent processing capabilities
  • Good speakers/earphones to listen to the classes
  • Browser - IE7+, Safari 5+, Firefox, Chrome
  • Operating System - Windows XP, Mac OS 10.6, Linux distro based on 3.0 kernel, Android 5.0, iOS 10

Course Outline

*Please note that the following outline is subject to change slightly at the teacher's discretion.

Part 1: You will receive a design brief with architectural requirements for a specific setting or genre.

You will learn to interpret the brief, gather references and create sketches so you can explore architectural design options and finalize the one best suited for the requirements.

Through continuous feedback at every step of the process, you will gain the ability to properly set up the correct isometric perspective for the design, draw out all the structural elements, and add additional details that improves readability and best communicates the storyline.

You will also gain the skills required to add line weight, cast shadows, flat colours, polishing and any necessary text elements so you can take your design to the next level

Part 2: You will choose an unused building option from the design exploration process (in Part 1), gather specific references and learn how to best organize them so you can generate 3 distinct level variations for your design

You will learn to use different structures, materials and additional elements to manipulate your designs and make them specific to the level requirements so it is easily understandable and best communicates the game setting to the viewer

You will also learn how to polish and refine your variations and organize them in an appealing manner
