Dynamic Drawing
Join Connor Willumsen* in a creative journey that goes beyond the ordinary. In this course, you won't just learn to draw dynamically; you'll master the art of quick, efficient drawing with confidence so you aren't always reaching for the eraser. By building up your understanding of perspective and space, you will learn to visualize scenes from multiple angles and gain the ability to accurately represent three-dimensional subjects in two-dimensional artwork. You will also learn how to effectively use line weight, texture, and gesture to capture dynamic motion and energy in your drawings.
By the end of this course, you'll have built the skills to draw directly and confidently, making every mark count. Develop the ability to capture life's moments on paper with immediacy and fun. Second level classes are for students who have a good foundation in the basics of realistic drawing (such as perspective, proportion, shading and colour theory) and already know how to use Photoshop, but need more in-depth knowledge to create professional and complex artwork.
This level is about expanding knowledge, strengthening skills, and transitioning to the world of concept art and illustration.

Term: Winter 2025
Class Timings: Wednesdays from 2 PM to 5 PM, Eastern Savings Time (EST or UTC-5h)
Date of first class: January 8th
Duration: 10 weeks
Please note that our classes times are listed as EST (GMT-5) but that starting on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, all class times will go into EDT (GMT-4)
If you are unable to attend the class during the times listed above, you will still have access to video recordings of the class lectures and will still receive personalized feedback from your instructor.
It should be noted that students should set aside a minimum of 3 hours per week to complete assignments for this class. Students may even require a bit more time (4-5 hours per week) depending on how quickly they can work through assignments.
*Please note that this class' duration is subject to change (to either 1.5 hours or 2 hours) depending on the number of enrolled students.
These shorter class formats are conducted with more of a personalized mentorship style, allowing students to have more time devoted to their assignments' critiques and the ability to ask more questions in class, while still maintaining all of the theory and planned curriculum for the regular class length.
Prerequisites
Skill requirements
To enroll in this course you should have:
- A foundation in gesture drawing, including basic anatomy and proportions.
- Ideally completed our Drawing the Human Form class or have equivalent practice/experience.

Language and age requirements
You should have at least intermediate level English to take this class. Please be advised that there could be artistic nudity in our classes. Students should be 14 years old to enroll.
Required Materials
- 11 x 14 (minimum), OR 14 x17 OR 18x24 inch pad of white drawing paper: Canson, Strathmore,
or Fabriano brand. NOT newsprint. - Notebook or sketchbook for taking notes
- 3 sheets of Canson Mi-Teints paper, 19x25 inches, Steel Grey or Felt Grey colour
- Staedtler Mars Lumograph graphite pencils, 3 of each: 2B, HB. 1 of each: 2H, 4H and 8B.
- Derwent Drawing pencil in Chinese White
- White plastic eraser
- Kneadable eraser (recommended, Staedtler karat art eraser)
- A mechanical eraser (recommended, Tombow Mono Zero Eraser Pen, or similar)
- A good quality pencil sharpener (recommended, Staedtler metal sharpener with a recipient)
- Clear plastic ruler: 30 cm / 12 inches or longer,
- 3 or 4 bulldog clips to hold paper onto a drawing board
- 1 x drawing board, 19-26 inches wide
Tech Requirements for Attending Syn Studio Online Classes
Minimum Requirements
- A strong uninterrupted broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) connection with a minimum 600kbps bandwidth (up/down).
- A Laptop/Desktop computer equipped with a single core processor (at least 1 GHZ processing speed) or a smartphone/tablet with equivalent processing capabilities
- Good speakers/earphones to listen to the classes
- Browser - IE7+, Safari 5+, Firefox, Chrome
- Operating System - Windows XP, Mac OS 10.6, Linux distro based on 3.0 kernel, Android 5.0, iOS 10

Course Outline
*Please note that the following outline is subject to change slightly at the teacher's discretion.
Weeks 1 to 4
Strengthen your observation skills and learn to visualize any scene from multiple angles.
Gain an in-depth understanding of negative space and perspective so you can create complex forms in the right composition.
Become proficient in using texture and weight to add detailing and create an illusion of depth and realism in your drawings.
Weeks 5 to 7
Learn the essential techniques required to depict the human figure from observation.
Gain proficiency in adding gestures, expressions, and action so you can accurately depict movement and emotions in your drawings.
Weeks 8 to 10
Apply all that you have learned to create a scene from imagination in the right composition while conforming to the intended narrative.
