The beauty of water media lies in its calligraphic immediacy, luminous color, and relative speed and spontaneity. Under the guidance of your teacher, Camila Picheco, you will explore the joy of creating expressive and lively watercolour paintings!
Camila will teach you her process for creating expressive and dynamic paintings with a fresh and contemporary feel. Starting with the basics, you will learn to combine different materials and gain deep knowledge of different painting methods so you can improve the quality of your paintings. You will also become proficient in additional techniques and tools commonly used by watercolour artists to paint urban scenes in isometric perspective as well as portraits and figures.
By the end of this course, you will have created your own personal watercolour painting that you can be proud of!

Second level classes are for students who have a good foundation in the basics of realistic drawing (such as perspective, proportion, shading and colour theory) and already know how to use Photoshop, but need more in-depth knowledge to create professional and complex artwork.
This level is about expanding knowledge, strengthening skills, and transitioning to the world of concept art and illustration.

Prerequisites
To enroll in this course you should have:
- A foundation in the basics of realistic drawing, such as basic perspective, proportions and shading.
- Ideally completed our Foundations of Drawing and Fundamentals of Perspective classes or have equivalent practice/experience.

You should have at least intermediate level English to take this class. Please be advised that there could be artistic nudity in our classes. Students should be 14 years old to enroll.
Required Materials
Material List:
- Eraser (any brand)
- Pencil sharpener (any brand)
- Sketching pencils (any)
- Watercolour brushes (Raphael and Princeton recommended)
- Round brush, #8 or #10
- Square/flat brush, #10 or #12
- Watercolour paints (suggested selection from brands Windsor and Newton, Coatman, Daniel Smith, or Van Gogh)
- Ultramarine Blue
- Burnt Sienna
- Raw Sienna
- Lemon Yellow
- Alizarin Crimson
- Manganese Blue Hue
- Sap Green
- Watercolour paper, 9”x12” minimum size (Canson XL, Fabriano Artistico, Arches recommended)
Optional materials:
- Black ink pen
- Masking fluid
- Masking tape
- Scanner
- Square ruler
Watercolour sketchbook (Etchrlab, Moleskine, recommended)
Course Outline
*Please note that the following outline is subject to change slightly at the teacher's discretion.
Weekly Outline
Week 1:
Introduction: Learn about essential watercolor painting materials. Exercise on different types of watercolor washes and shading with a demo of a simple portrait of a house.
Week 2:
Introduction to Colour Theory. Exercises on watercolor washes using new tools such as masking fluid, masking tape, and salt, among others. Demo of a value study with a black and white reference.
Week 3 to 5:
Learn the importance of perspectives and the role it plays in creating a beautiful watercolor painting. Gain proficiency in painting urban scenes with a Demo exercise featuring photo references.
Gain knowledge of the basics of isometric perspective with an isometric drawing demo so you can create realistic watercolor paintings of architectural structures and buildings.
Week 6:
Learn all about drawing accurate figures and portraits using so your watercolor paintings look more realistic and true to life
Week 7:
Become proficient in all the steps and methods required to sketch an urban scene on location using a sketchbook with a demo of an urban sketching scene with a photo reference
Weeks 8 and 9:
Gain insights into working on a real time book cover project from sketch to final painting according to client briefing and directives
Week 10:
Strengthen your understanding of isometric illustration with a deep demo exercise.
