    Teacher Information

    Felicien Nourry is a concept artist and illustrator with more than 12 years of experience in the video game industry. During his career, he has worked on multiple AAA titles such as Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Rainbow Six Siege, Highlander, Far Cry 3 and Far Cry Primal. Felicien possess a deep understanding and know how of all the facets of game art development – from conception to production. He also enjoys doing urban landscape studies both digitally and Traditionally. Felicien currently works as a Senior Concept artist at Ubisoft Montreal.

    Course Outline

    During this 10 week course, the instructor will use a variety of in class exercises, assignments, demonstrations and field trips aimed at boosting your observation, composition and analytical skills and enhancing your visual memory so you can quickly sketch environment concepts from life and imagination.

    The following topics will be covered:

    Strengthen your observation skills so you can enhance your visual reference library and sketch a variety of different environments in a fast and efficient manner.

    Become proficient in effectively composing an image so you can produce captivating environment sketches that draw the viewer in and direct them to the compositional focal points of your choice.

    Acquire the skills required to sketch in multiple perspectives and select the best viewpoint so you can effectively showcase the desired mood of your artwork.

    Gain proficiency in analyzing a variety of complex structures and architectural styles and learn how to authentically depict depth and scale so you can sketch realistic urban and interior scenes.

    Gain the skills required to accurately measure complex angles from life and depict flora and other elements of the natural world so you can accurately sketch a variety of visually appealing landscapes.

    Description

    Do you possess basic skills in perspective drawing and want to eventually be able to create stunning environment art? Top concept artists and illustrators are highly proficient in observational environment sketching and possess a deep understanding of perspective and composition as well as key architectural knowledge. In addition they have cultivated a vast visual memory and reference library for interesting flora, architectural, geographic and interior design elements. In this 10-week course, taught by a veteran environment designer, you will build up these essential environment art fundamentals as you progress along the path of becoming a professional level concept artist or illustrator.

    This course features live demonstrations, field trips, in-class exercises, homework assignments and one-on-one feedback aimed at enhancing your observation, perspective and composition skills as well as expanding your architectural knowledge, visual memory and reference library. You will strengthen your composition skills so you can produce captivating environment sketches that draw the viewer in and lead their eye to the compositional focal points of your choice. You will understand how to effectively place key elements within your sketch, in addition to becoming proficient sketching in multiple perspectives and learning how to select the best viewpoint to showcase desired mood of your artwork. In addition, you will become skilled in analyzing a variety of complex structures and architectural styles and authentically depicting depth and scale so you can sketch realistic urban and interior scenes. Finally, you will gain proficiency in measuring complex angles from life and depicting flora and other elements of the natural world so you can accurately sketch a variety of visually appealing landscapes.

    By the end of this course, you will have all the skills necessary to accurately sketch environments from life and you will have taken a giant step on the path to attaining professional level results. You will be able to produce environment concepts and illustrations that are well composed with accurate perspective and realistic features. Furthermore, this investment in your art fundamentals will take your observational and analytical skills skills to the next level. You will have gained new high quality portfolio pieces and what’s more, you will be much closer to creating production ready concept art and jaw-dropping, highly immersive environment illustration.

    Pre-requisite

    You should have completed Urban Sketching in Perspective (or have equivalent experience in realistic style drawing and painting: use of proper perspective, proportions, shading and colour).

    Please note that you will be needing a sketchbook and pen/pencil for this course. However you have the option of using a laptop/tablet for certain exercises. The digital artwork in the class slideshow showcases teacher work and is not representative of the course content.

    Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level French to take this class (the teacher will use many visual examples and there will usually be students in the class who speak English and can help you if you don't understand something).
