Fundamentals of Perspective

Have you ever had trouble drawing in proper perspective? Are you unable to quickly and accurately sketch people, buildings and vehicles in perspective, such as in an urban scene? Perspective drawing is a method that will let you draw realistically with a proper sense of space and depth. Drawing in perspective is one of the most fundamental skills for a visual artist and it will allow you to create realistic and lifelike images. In this course, you will learn to believably depict architectural objects, props, vehicles, indoor and outdoor spaces and living things in proper perspective.

Throughout this 10 week course, you will learn via live demonstrations of perspective drawing, essential exercises and personalized feedback on your artwork from your instructor. By the end of this class, you will have a thorough and complete understanding of perspective and its various techniques which will enable you to effectively create the illusion of depth and space while drawing 3d objects on a 2d plane. You will be well equipped with an arsenal of perspective tools and techniques which will help your artwork gain a proper sense of scale, accuracy, depth and solidity. You will have several pieces for your portfolio and a solid foundation for reaching a professional level of drawing.

Course Outline

Drawing in perspective is one of the most fundamental skills for a visual artist and it will allow you to create realistic and lifelike images.

Weeks 1 and 2

Learn the essentials of perspective drawing so you can represent 3-Dimensional objects on a 2-Dimensional plane. Understand how to represent various forms in orthogonal projection and in correct perspective, which is a key skill for artists.

Weeks 3 - 4

Become proficient at drawing objects and scenes in one-point perspective which is used when you are looking at an object or scene straight on (imagine staring down train tracks vanishing into the distance).

Weeks 4 - 6

Acquire expertise drawing various forms in 2 point perspective, which is essential for all artists who want to represent concepts and scenes where the objects and people are seen from different angles that aren’t exactly straight on (example: the widely used ¾ view).

Weeks 7 - 9

Learn to draw in 3 point perspective, essential for cityscapes, as well as multiple point and curvilinear perspectives which will allow you to represent all types of scenes and points of view. This will allow you to create fish-eye, distorted perspective and other dynamic and interesting effects in your artwork.

Week 10

Gain the skills required to analyze a complex object and break it down into smaller, easier to draw forms and then represent it all in an exploded view drawing. This skill, essential for industrial designers, architects and concept artists will allow you to effectively deconstruct and represent any object or architectural structure in proper perspective with a high level of accuracy.
