Description

Thank you for your interest in our 24 month AEC: Concept Art Program as well as our 12 month Online Concept Art Program at Syn Studio. Please use this guide to prepare your application.

To participate in the portfolio application review, you simply need to do the following:

Putting your application together

Your application must include your Portfolio, Descriptive List, Resumé, and Letter of Motivation.

Portfolio and Descriptive List

The portfolio must be a collection of your original artwork in a realistic or semi-realistic style (stylized is acceptable for a few pieces). The majority of the pieces in the portfolio must have been created within in the last year and must demonstrate that you:

  • Can draw decent proportions, perspective and anatomy
  • Can use light and value to convincingly show form
  • Can use colour and understand the basics of colour theory
  • Have knowledge of painting digitally in Photoshop
  • Can create original concepts that show some potential for interesting design

Note: Do not include celebrity portraits, fetish, erotica, furry, overtly sexualized or gory art, fanart, manga/anime or any AI art.

Resumé

Your resumé must list your educational and professional experience and any relevant training in art.

Letter of Motivation

Your letter of motivation should answer the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be a concept artist?
  • Why did you choose this particular program at Syn Studio?
  • Why do you think you have what it takes to be successful as a concept artist?
  • Tell us a little about your tastes in art, culture, movies, video games and television

Your letter of motivation must be written by you.

What to include in your portfolio

Your portfolio should contain a minimum of 12 images, and a maximum of 25.

  • At least 2 pieces that include objects or buildings in perspective
  • At least 2 environment concepts
  • At least 2 character concepts
  • At least 1 prop or vehicle concept
  • Optionally, include some 3D work. (For example, work done in Zbrush, Maya, Blender etc.)
  • Descriptive List (see below)

*Please note that more than one of these requirements can be demonstrated in one artwork.

Submitting your application

Once your portfolio and application are ready, you can pay the $ 25 CAD application fee below and then proceed to choose your program, your intake
