Foundations of Drawing 2
Foundations of Drawing 2 is a direct follow-up to our popular Foundations of Drawing course. Taught by accomplished figurative artist, Donna Shvil, this class will equip you with the skills required to create engaging artwork with strong visual appeal.
Through lectures, demonstrations and drawing exercises aimed at improving your observational skills, you will learn to effectively create the illusion of depth and realism with composition, perspective and tonal values. Finally, you will acquire the skills needed to accurately render a variety of materials, textures and drapery using traditional drawing mediums like a professional!
By the end of this course, you will have gained the confidence and ability to construct the face and human figure, render materials and textures and draw complex subjects.

Strong fundamentals in traditional drawing, painting and sculpting are the foundations to create amazing artwork.
This level is about solidifying the fundamentals, getting a refresher on the most important art principles, and learning tricks to create realistic drawing and paintings.

Class Timings: Saturdays from 2 PM to 5 PM, Eastern Savings Time (EST or UTC-5h)
Date of first class: January 11th
Duration: 10 weeks
Please note that our classes times are listed as EST (GMT-5) but that starting on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, all class times will go into EDT (GMT-4)
If you are unable to attend the class during the times listed above, you will still have access to video recordings of the class lectures and will still receive personalized feedback from your instructor.
*Please note that this class' duration is subject to change (to either 1.5 hours or 2 hours) depending on the number of enrolled students.
These shorter class formats are conducted with more of a personalized mentorship style, allowing students to have more time devoted to their assignments' critiques and the ability to ask more questions in class, while still maintaining all of the theory and planned curriculum for the regular class length.
Prerequisites
Skill requirements
To enroll in this course you should have:
- A foundation in the basics of realistic drawing, such as basic perspective, proportions and shading.
- Ideally completed our Foundations of Drawing class or have equivalent practice/experience.

Language and age requirements
You should have at least intermediate level English to take this class. Please be advised that there could be artistic nudity in our classes. Students should be 14 years old to enroll.
Required Materials

- Erasers: Kneadable Eraser
- Erasers: White Eraser
- Erasers: Tombow Mechanical Eraser Pen or similar
- Pencil Sharpener: Quality pencil sharpener (Such as Staedtler)
- Sketching Pencils: HB Pencil
- Sketching Pencils: B Pencil
- Sketching Pencils: 2B Pencil
- Sketchbooks: A sketchbook with removable pages 11"x14
Optional materials:
- Canson Tracing Paper Pad (find size)
- A blending stump
- Pen shaped eraser
Optionally, you may draw digitally if more convenient for you.
Tech Requirements for Attending Syn Studio Online Classes

- A strong uninterrupted broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) connection with a minimum 600kbps bandwidth (up/down).
- A Laptop/Desktop computer equipped with a single core processor (at least 1 GHZ processing speed) or a smartphone/tablet with equivalent processing capabilities

Course Outline
*Please note that the following outline is subject to change slightly at the teacher's discretion.
Weeks 1 and 2:
Gain a thorough understanding of value and light. Learn how to effectively render a variety of surfaces, textures and materials in your drawing using extended value studies
Weeks 3 and 4:
Gain proficiency in breaking down the human face and constructing the head from multiple angles. Learn to analyze facial features and expressions and incorporate them to your life drawings so they can display a variety of convincing emotions
Weeks 5 to 10:
Learn to analyze the basic proportions and subtle differences in the male and female bodies so you can accurately construct convincing partial and full body portraits of the human form in costume.
Gain proficiency in rendering a variety of materials and textures to your drawings to make them appear visually appealing
Create finished drawings for your portfolio and present completed work in a professional manner.
