Charles Vinh is a master painter and illustrator who repeatedly wins high profile contracts with companies such as Visa, Canada Post, Bombardier, Sapporo, Chevrolet, Unibroue and many others. He has also illustrated several book covers, been selected to paint official portraits of dozens of NHL all-stars and has been a matte painter and art consultant for television and film. His paintings have won numerous prestigious awards and he is an amazing teacher with many years of experience.

Do you wish to be a build a successful portfolio but find your artwork to be unpolished and of lower calibre than you want? Do you think a possible lack of strong fundamental skills may be preventing you from creating high quality artwork? All the tricks and fancy techniques in the world won't make you a good artist unless you have solid fundamentals. Strong fundamental skills along with rigorous practice are the building blocks of success for any concept artist.
In this skills reboot class, through a set of specifically designed exercises and step by step tutorials, you will level-up your core artistic abilities. You will learn about the essentials of composition and how effectively to distinguish tone from colour. You will increase your knowledge of working with colour, starting from the basics and then going in-depth in colour theory, managing colour intensity and temperature. In addition to this, you will gain expertise in perspective drawing and the usage of different types of contrasts, all of which will be used in your final illustration project. In this project, which will be reviewed and critiqued by the instructor on a 1-on-1 basis, you will push your level of rendering and realism, creating your best ever portfolio piece!
By the end of this class, you will have strengthened your fundamental skills, giving you the capability to refine your artwork and make it look more professional. Your knowledge of core artistic skills will have increased by leaps and bounds, enabling you to confidently create a killer portfolio that makes heads turn.
*Laptop and tablet required
You should have equivalent experience OR you should have taken the classes:
EITHER Foundations of Painting (if you will work in oil or with a similar medium),
OR Expressive Painting in Watercolour (if you will work in watercolour or with a similar medium)
OR Digital Painting (if you will work in Photoshop or with a similar medium)
You also need to have a laptop with Photoshop installed and a tablet sensitive to pen pressure (such as a Wacom tablet). Or you need a tablet-computer with Photoshop installed that is sensitive to pen pressure (such as the Cintiq Companion). And you need to have some basic skills in Photoshop and be comfortable drawing and painting in Photoshop and know how to use layers and the basic tools (all things you can learn quickly with free tutorials online).
Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level English OR French to take this class (the teacher is bilingual and can explain concepts and give feedback in both languages)
