Donald Caron is a highly acclaimed illustrator and concept artist with more than 15 years of experience working in video games, film, comics and advertising. While at Ubisoft, he created illustrations for blockbuster titles in the Assassin’s Creed, Watchdogs and Splinter Cell Universes. Master of composition, colour and light he has been selected to design and paint multiple posters for feature films, in addition to several posters for Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival. It is with great honour that we present a special masterclass with this incredible artist.

Donald will be busy working on exciting new concept art projects during the next semester and we expect him to be back to teach at Syn Studio soon!

Jose Holder

Tarcisio Ferreira is an illustrator and fine artist with 14 years of professional experience. He was trained in classical realist drawing at the prestigious Academy of Realist Art and his illustrations have been featured in many of the largest magazines and newspapers in his native Brazil. He is a a sought-after instructor having given several popular classesin classical drawing at the University of Brasilia and Comoequetalá. We are fortunate to be able to offer this class with him during his stay in Montreal.

Louis Sciannambolo is a freelance concept artist and game artist and former co-founder and Art Director of Rad Sandwich Studios. During his time at Rad Sandwich he worked on VR projects such as Poltergus as well as prototypes with Minority Media. In his freelance career, he has worked for a variety of clients such as Sauropod Games, Kitfox Games and Clever Endeavour Games on titles such as The Shrouded Isle, Moon Hunters and Castle Story.

Andrew Sonea

Andrew Sonea is a 2D Marketing Artist at Gameloft, Montreal. A former winner of the L.Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Award, Andrew specializes in character design and worked as a 2D artist for Fox Cub Games before joining Gameloft. During his freelance career, he has worked for a variety of companies including Cryptozoic Entertainment, Modiphius Entertainment, Fantasy Flight Games, Alderac Entertainment Group and Art by Gameco on games such as HEX: Shards of Fate, Conan RPG, Infinity RPG, Emerald Lands: A Sourcebook for Rokugan, Lost Legacy: Legend of the Five Rings and Might and Magic: Duels of Champions. We are super excited to welcome Jose Holder to this month’s Syn Studio podcast! Jose is currently working with Titan Comics as a Series artist on the Assassin’s Creed comic books and has also done storyboards for the Assassin’s Creed franchise among many other Ubisoft games. Previously he has done storyboard and concept art for films such as X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Glass Castle, Warm Bodies, The Mummy 3: Curse Of The Dragon Emperor, C.R.A.Z.Y. and the list goes on… Jose has also recently directed, written, produced and storyboarded the short film Red Ruby, which is a supernatural thriller meets quantum nightmare and has already won several awards in the film festival circuit.

Grant is a senior concept artist at Ubisoft where he creates character and environment concepts for various high profile games including Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, The Division and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. A veteran artist with close to 15 years of freelance and industry experience, Grant’s other credits include generating storyboards for the animated TV show Delilah & Julius, creating concept art for video games such as Age of Decadence and F.E.A.R 3, in addition to conducting a workshop with ImagineFX magazine.

In the early and mid 90’s he worked for Marvel Comics on eight series including Dr. Strange, Nightbreed, Saint Sinner, Spider-Man and Ghost Rider 2099. Since then he’s been organizing Comics Jams, founding Sequential (Canada’s comics news metablog) and working as a freelancer on a variety of animation, comics and illustration projects including the Sam and Max animated series, the Ghostbusters and Terminator 3: Before the Rise comics and contributing to three Eisner winning anthologies! His personal projects, Dream Life, RevolveR and Therefore Repent!, have also garnered much critical acclaim.

André Pijet

André Pijet is an art director, painter, author, illustrator, caricaturist and graphic artist who has worked, taught and exhibited throughout Canada and Europe for over thirty years. He works with major advertising agencies and publishing companies, and was recently commissioned by Google to create a mural for their Montreal headquarters. André has been published regularly in newspapers and magazines; has won over a dozen art prizes in Canada and Europe and also published six books of illustrations and caricatures.

Nick Oroc is a senior concept artist at Ubisoft, Montreal. His credits include: Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Rainbow Six (Lockdown, Vegas, Siege and more), Splinter Cell (Conviction and Blacklist), Assassin’s Creed: Project Legacy, Far Cry Primal and Child of Light. Prior to this, Nick worked as a senior concept artist at Behaviour Interactive, where was involved in games such as WET, Iron Man and Rango. His artwork and tutorials have been published several times in 2dartist magazine and he has been a guest speaker at two Adapt Conferences (2008 and 2009). In addition to this, Nick was also a guest artist at the The Art of Games exhibition in Aosta, Italy and is an experienced teacher.

Our guest this month on the Syn Studio podcast is Yohann Schepacz, the art director and co-owner of Oxan Studio, a visual development studio which creates high-end imagery for films, print media and video games. A concept artist and illustrator with over 10 years of experience in the entertainment industry, he has worked as a senior concept artist for Eidos on many AAA games such as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Rise of the Tomb Raider, among others. Yohann is known for his unique ideas and technical versatility which have enabled him to work on other high profile projects such as Magic The Gathering, Independence Day Resurgence and Horizon Zero Dawn. In addition to this, he is also working on adding more content to his his widely popular personal art project “TINKIET”.

Felicien Nourry

Felicien Nourry is a concept artist and illustrator with more than 12 years of experience in the video game industry. During his career, he has worked on multiple AAA titles such as Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Rainbow Six Siege, Highlander, Far Cry 3 and Far Cry Primal. Felicien possess a deep understanding and know how of all the facets of game art development – from conception to production. He also enjoys doing urban landscape studies both digitally and Traditionally. Felicien currently works as a Senior Concept artist at Ubisoft Montreal.

Donald Caron

Donald Caron is a highly acclaimed illustrator and concept artist with more than 15 years of experience working in video games, film, comics and advertising. While at Ubisoft, he created illustrations for blockbuster titles in the Assassin’s Creed, Watchdogs and Splinter Cell Universes. Master of composition, colour and light he has been selected to design and paint multiple posters for feature films, in addition to several posters for Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival. It is with great honour that we present a special masterclass with this incredible artist.

Donald will be busy working on exciting new concept art projects during the next semester and we expect him to be back to teach at Syn Studio soon!

Raphael Lacoste

Raphael Lacoste is currently brand art director for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise. His credits also include, as art director: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Two Thrones and The Warrior Within and as matte painter or senior concept artist: Terminator Salvation, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Death Race, Immortals, Repo Men and Jupiter Ascending. In addition, Raphael has won a Visual Effects Society award for his work as Art Director on Prince of Persia the Two Thrones cinematics and is also a popular and experienced teacher.

Jason Tonks

Jason Tonks is a concept and 3D artist with over 10 years of industry experience for companies such as Warner Brother Games and Ubisoft. During his career, Jason has worked on many high profile AAA games such as Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Injustice 2, Batman: Arkham Origins and Splinter Cell: Blacklist and is currently working at Bethesda Studios on a top secret AAA game. In addition to this, Jason was also a mentor at the National School of Interactive Entertainment for a year where he helped aspiring game artists in their artistic journey.

Brian Sum

Brian Sum is a senior concept artist at Bioware, Montreal. He possesses almost 15 years of industry experience having worked on many high profile games such as Mass Effect 2 and 3, Dragon Age Origins, Sonic Chronicles and Shadowrun. Brian is well known for his colourful, detailed and fresh robot designs and has had his artwork featured in several publications such as Imagine FX Magazine, 2dartist Magazine, Prime Digital Art Collection, Digital Art Masters – Volume 8 and Digital Painting Techniques – Volume 5.

Grant Hillier

Grant is a senior concept artist at Ubisoft where he creates character and environment concepts for various high profile games including Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, The Division and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. A veteran artist with close to 15 years of freelance and industry experience, Grant’s other credits include generating storyboards for the animated TV show Delilah & Julius, creating concept art for videogames such as Age of Decadence and F.E.A.R 3, in addition to conducting a workshop with ImagineFX magazine.

Jessy has taught at many schools including Centre NAD, where he created the University’s first digital matte curriculum. He is now a teacher at Syn Studio, in the Concept Art Diploma Program.
