Nick Oroc is a senior concept artist at Ubisoft, Montreal. His credits include: Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Rainbow Six (Lockdown, Vegas, Siege and more), Splinter Cell (Conviction and Blacklist), Assassin’s Creed: Project Legacy, Far Cry Primal and Child of Light. Prior to this, Nick worked as a senior concept artist at Behaviour Interactive, where was involved in games such as WET, Iron Man and Rango. His artwork and tutorials have been published several times in 2dartist magazine and he has been a guest speaker at two Adapt Conferences (2008 and 2009). In addition to this, Nick was also a guest artist at the The Art of Games exhibition in Aosta, Italy and is an experienced teacher.
Concept Art and Illustration > Portfolio Development
Students in this exclusive course are selected after an assessment of their portfolios and letter of intent. Students will begin the course by assessing their portfolio and identifying, with the teacher’s help, the pieces they want to improve. Each class typically consists of a couple paint-overs of selected student work by the instructor and as the students work on their pieces, the instructor visits each student and provides one-on-one feedback on how to improve the selected portfolio piece.

During this 10 week course offered for the first time, senior concept artist Nick Oroc will provide you with the tips and tools required to improve your portfolio and take it to the level that matches industry standards or makes you an automatic top choice for high level professional concept art programs. Through a series of demonstrations, guest lectures and paintover exercises, you will learn to refine and enhance your portfolio pieces so they appear more professional and demonstrate a high level of artistry. At every step, you will receive personalized feedback from the instructor to help improve portfolio pieces during your portfolio building process. By a combination of self assessment and teacher evaluation, you will identify your strengths and determine your specialization so you can modify your portfolio to showcase your skills and artistic direction. You will gain the skills required to customize your portfolio according to specific demands so it can be catered for the specific schools, companies and clients you are targeting and doesn’t look generic. You will become proficient in evaluating your portfolio and eliminating the weakest pieces so your portfolio demonstrates your strengths and competencies in the best way possible. Finally, you will gain proficiency in the essential graphic design and marketing skills so you can improve your branding and present your portfolio, showcasing your strengths and specialization, in a visually appealing manner.
By the end of this course, you will have gained the knowledge required to build an outstanding concept art portfolio that meets and exceeds industry standards. Furthermore you will have eliminated your weakest pieces and improved existing ones to make them best reflect your highest level of skill and specialization. This will give a big boost the overall impact of your portfolio, thereby increasing your chances of getting selected for a top level professional concept art program or landing a job in the concept art industry.
This is an advanced class. You must have completed multiple digital classes at Syn Studio or have equivalent experience from another school or as a “self-taught” artist.
To qualify for this course, you must submit 5-8 digital illustrations or concept art pieces. We will review them to determine if they are sufficiently advanced for you to be able to benefit greatly from this class.
If you are a full time student: these pieces should be included in your application portfolio (which you can update and re-submit if necessary).

*Note that you are required to bring a laptop equipped with Photoshop and a Wacom tablet to each class (or equivalent technology) so you can work on your pieces and improve them during class time by following the teacher’s feedback.
