    Christian Robert de Massy is one of the film industry's best kept secrets. He's been working for the last 8 years as a freelance concept artist and illustrator on films such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, Snow White and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. All without ever having put any artwork online (until now). He's known for his incredible speed and the beauty of his environment paintings and he's a popular teacher here at Syn Studio.

    Course Outline

    Week 1 - Learn essential principles of composition and interior design. Get an overview of the process of designing interiors and begin researching and thumbnailing for your first assignment. 

    Weeks 2 - 3 - Learn how to follow an art direction and design environments that fit the story and the design mandate. Understand how to craft a believable environment that your audience will relate to. Learn some perspective tips and tricks to speed up your workflow. 

    Weeks 4 - 5 - Understand how to light your environments to achieve the effect and mood you want. Acquire a logical approach to illustration and learn to apply the rules of optics to understand how different kinds of light react with the textures and materials in your interior space. 

    Weeks 6 - 7 - Understand how to achieve superior levels of realism, work within constraints and effectively communicate your concept so that what finally gets built is as close as possible to your design. 

    Weeks 8 - 10 - Add richness to your environment through details that enhance the narrative and the atmosphere. Learn some advanced rendering techniques and understand how and when to apply the finishing touches to your interior environments.

The ability to design convincing interior spaces is possibly the most useful specialization a concept artist can have. Most AAA video games and movies tend to require more concept art for unique interior environments than anything else.

    Gaining the ability to create jaw-dropping indoor spaces that captivate the audience, and fit with the story. You will have an art direction and production constraints to learn to clearly communicate those designs to your art director and the production artists. This class will make you an incredibly valuable member of any concept artists team.

    In this environment painting masterclass, you will learn to envision, design and paint rich and interesting interior environments from a veteran concept artist working in the film industry. Through lecture, demonstration, exercises, assignments and personalized feedback and correction, you will be guided step-by-step through the entire process of creating jaw-dropping environment paintings.

    You will learn essential principles of composition, interior design, lighting and colour theory in addition to powerful digital painting techniques in Photoshop that will take your artwork to next level of realism and save you valuable time.

    By the end of this class, you will have the understanding and skills necessary to efficiently create beautiful and believable interior environment concept art and illustration. You will have several stunning new environments for your portfolio, an improved design sense, increased painting speed and a much deeper understanding of lighting and interior design. And you will have become proficient at one of the most valuable skillsets in the industry.


    This is a masterclass aimed at advanced students and junior artists working in the industry. To take this class, you should have completed our Digital Painting class or have equivalent experience (meaning you are comfortable and at least somewhat proficient at painting in Photoshop). In addition, you need to know the basics of perspective.

    Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level English to take this class (the teacher will use many visual examples and there will usually be students in the class who speak French and can help you if you don't understand something). In addition, the teacher can speak with you individually in French to help you understand but the course content will still be presented in English.

    **Note that you are required to bring your own laptop and Wacom tablet to each class.
