    Teacher Information

    Charles Vinh is master painter and illustrator who repeatedly wins high profile contracts with companies such as Visa, Canada Post, Bombardier, Sapporo, Chevrolet, Unibroue and many others. He has also illustrated several book covers, been selected to paint official portraits of dozens of NHL all-stars and has been a matte painter and art consultant for television and film. His paintings have won numerous prestigious awards and he is an amazing teacher with many years of experience.

    Course Outline

    Part 1 : Value, Colour, Lighting, textures and materials

    Weeks 1 and 2 – Train your eye to effectively separate colour and value with the challenging exercise to paint a face using non-skin tones.

    Weeks 3 and 4 – Become proficient rendering textures and materials such as metal, fabric, and glass.

    Weeks 4 and 5 - Gain skill painting props with cool and diffuse lighting.

    Weeks 6 and 7 - Acquire proficiency painting from a mannequin and props under warm, direct lighting.

    Part 2: Anatomy and imaginative illustration

    Weeks 7 and 8 – Develop your anatomy knowledge through specific studies of the horse.

    Weeks 9 and 10 – Learn how to render the horse and integrate imaginative elements using reference.

    Do you already have fundamentals and know Photoshop and want to create high-level professional-quality digital paintings?

    If you've taken our Digital Painting course or are already relatively advanced and comfortable painting digitally then this course is for you. It will boost your understanding of value, colour, lighting, textures, materials, anatomy and illustration so you can create jaw-dropping digital illustrations and concept art.

    In this 2-part course you will learn ways to increase your proficiency painting in Photoshop and the techniques that will give you an edge so you can create stunning images. Note that this course is about mastering art fundamentals in a digital medium – not about the software itself. You should already know all about using lock-layer transparency, gradients, selections, adjustment layers, etc., so now we can focus on taking your digital illustration skills to the next level.

    By the end of this course you will have skills and knowledge required to be a top-notch digital painter. Your understanding of colour and lighting will have reached a higher level providing you with the ability to create images that will raise the quality of your portfolio.

    *Laptop and tablet required


    This is a class designed for people who have already taken our Digital Painting course or are aware of advanced photoshop techniques and wish to master art fundamentals in a digital medium.  

    You also need to have a laptop with Photoshop installed and a tablet sensitive to pen pressure (such as a Wacom tablet). Or you need a tablet-computer with Photoshop installed that is sensitive to pen pressure (such as the Cintiq Companion). And you need to have some basic skills in Photoshop and be comfortable drawing and painting in Photoshop and know how to use layers and the basic tools (all things you can learn quickly with free tutorials online).

    Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level English to take this class (the teacher will use many visual examples and there will usually be students in the class who speak French and can help you if you don't understand something)
