Do you dream of creating jaw-dropping fantasy illustration for clients like Wizards of the Coast and Fantasy Flight Games? However, even when inspired, sometimes we struggle to realize our epic visions because of a lack of knowledge, skills and experience. That’s when it’s time to learn and get master coaching on how to craft stunning fantasy illustration from an industry veteran.
In this 10-week crash course, you will learn the A to Z of the craft from a successful fantasy illustrator. Specifically, you will learn how to properly interpret a client brief, create thumbnails, gather reference, receive and incorporate feedback, and take your image to polish. You will learn how to iterate and problem-solve your way to the best visual solution for your client.
Furthermore, you will understand how to choose the correct composition, symbolism, pose, costume, props, setting, lighting and colour palette. This will allow you to tell a story in a single image and create the desired mood, atmosphere and impact on the viewer.
By the end of this course, you will have everything you need to create outstanding fantasy illustration for book covers, box art, card art and much more. You will have levelled up your skills and created a new fantastic illustration for your portfolio. What’s more, you will have learned the secrets of the craft from a 10-year industry veteran so you can build a relevant portfolio, get work in the industry, develop productive relationships with your clients and become a successful fantasy illustrator.

This is a class designed for people who have already taken our Digital Painting course or are aware of advanced Photoshop techniques.
You should have completed at least some drawing and basic painting courses (or have equivalent experience in realistic style drawing and painting: use of proper perspective, proportions, shading and colour).
Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level English to take this class (the teacher will use many visual examples and there will usually be students in the class who speak French and can help you if you don't understand something)
You need to have a laptop with Photoshop installed and a tablet sensitive to pen pressure (such as a Wacom tablet). Or you need a tablet-computer with Photoshop installed that is sensitive to pen pressure (such as the Cintiq Companion).
In this class, students will learn how to handle a fantasy illustration client commission.
Weeks 1 - 5 - How to Create a Fantasy Illustration from a Client Brief : the Basic Process
You will receive a fantasy illustration brief with specific requirements as you would from a real client.
The instructor will show you his methods to interpret the brief, create thumbnails, gather reference, receive and incorporate feedback, and take the image to polish in Photoshop.
You will become proficient in these methods as the instructor takes your hand and guides you through this powerful fantasy illustration process.
Weeks 6 - 10 - Creating a Polished Fantasy Illustration for your Portfolio and your Career
You will choose 1 brief from several options given. Following the process you learned in the first part of this course, you will create an impressive fantasy illustration for your portfolio under the guidance of the instructor.
You will gain mastery of the process and learn how to choose the correct composition, symbolism, pose, costumes, props, setting, lighting and colour palette. This will allow you to tell a story in a single image and create the desired mood, atmosphere and impact on the viewer.
Finally, you will learn the business skills of the trade and how to negotiate and create successful and long-lasting relationships with your clients so you will get keep getting great commissions.
