Do you want to be able to create stunning and immersive environment concept art for the entertainment industry? Advanced art skills and strong design fundamentals are essential for creating environments that enthrall the audience and create a captivating visual experience. In this 10 week course taught by a veteran concept artist, you will gain expertise in the tools and techniques required to design fantastic environment concepts for video games and movies.
During the course, you will learn a powerful concept art pipeline used by industry experts to create the desired mood, atmosphere and visual impact in their environments.
Through a series of structured assignments, live demonstrations and one-on-one feedback, the instructor will guide you through all the steps required to create jaw-dropping professional level concept art using a combination of Photoshop and the powerful and free 3D software: Blender. You will become proficient in the fundamentals of photography and reference gathering so you can build a visual reference library that can be used as an inspiration during your environment design process. You will gain expertise in creating a series of quick thumbnail sketches and performing compositional and colour studies so you can explore multiple ideas and select the best option to create a spectacular environment. You will learn how to best control the lighting, fog and level of detail so you can guide the viewer's eye and create the most visually appealing image that drives your story. Finally you will apply photobashing and paintover techniques, render your image in Photoshop and adjust the mood and tonal values so you can create realistic, detailed and jaw-dropping environment concept art.
By the end of this course will have a stunning new portfolio piece that you can be proud of. You will have added Blender, a powerful creation tool, to your arsenal. And finally, you will have learned a new cutting-edge concept art pipeline that will enable you to create breathtaking 3D environments.

Duration: 10 weeks
You should have completed our Digital Painting and Intro to Environment Design classes or have equivalent experience in Photoshop and can draw accurately in perspective to take this course.
You do not require any prior 3D knowledge to take this class. Having basic knowledge of Blender would be an advantage for this course but is not required if you are fast at learning software. To prepare for this course, if you have little to no Blender experience, it is recommended to play around with it and watch some YouTube tutorials at least a few weeks before starting class.
Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level English to take this class (the teacher is bilingual and can explain concepts and give feedback in both languages).
You are required to bring a Laptop equipped with a Wacom tablet as well as Blender and Photoshop.
Weeks 1 - 2
Gain proficiency in the fundamentals of photography and reference gathering so you can assemble a visual reference library to inspire and guide your environment design process.
Weeks 3 - 4
Learn effective techniques for creating thumbnail sketches and apply what you’ve learned to an exterior environment complete with buildings and props. Become proficient in generating useful composition, colour and perspective studies so you can explore multiple design options to find the best visual solution for your image.
Weeks 5 - 8
Learn the basics of modeling and texturing in Blender so you can create a 3D environment from your sketches. Understand how to add lighting and fog strategically to create the most compelling mood and atmosphere for your concept and maximize its storytelling aspects and visual appeal.
Weeks 9 - 10
Export your 3D scene into Photoshop and learn the most effective photobashing and paintover techniques to make your concept more eye-catching. Finally, understand how to best adjust the colours and tones while refining and polishing your image so you can create vibrant and realistic fully rendered 3D environment concepts.
