Concept Design

Do you possess good concept art fundamentals but don’t yet have sufficient advanced skills and knowledge to efficiently produce truly stunning and original professional-level concept designs? Do you wish to learn the methods and techniques developed by top concept artists to efficiently find the best new ideas and create masterfully designed concept art pieces that strike an emotional chord with your audience? In today’s fast paced industry, it is critical for concept artists to be proficient in a variety of cutting-edge concept design methods so they can quickly and effectively succeed at any design challenge they encounter on the job. In this 10-week course taught by senior concept artist Chase Toole, you will acquire the design knowledge and skills of a top concept designer and use them to generate professional level concept art.

 

This course features live demonstrations, assignments and one-on-one feedback aimed at boosting your design skills and enhancing your workflow so you can level up as a concept designer and create stunning artwork for any movie, game or other entertainment product. You will become proficient in quickly brainstorming numerous solutions for a problem and selecting the best one so you can effectively navigate any design roadblock you encounter and create emotionally appealing concepts. Through continuous feedback and coaching from the teacher, you will acquire the skills required to refine and polish your designs so you can create professional-level concept art.  

By the end of this course, you will have improved your ideation skills and added several new techniques to your concept design repertoire which will increase your productivity and enable you to tackle on-the-job design challenges with ease. Furthermore, you will have created unique, captivating, well-executed concept designs that can make your portfolio stand out from the crowd.

Pre-Requisites

This is an advanced course designed for people who have already taken either our Intro to Concept Art or Digital Painting courses or have equivalent experience.

Language requirements: You need at least intermediate level English to take this class (the teacher is bilingual and can explain concepts and give feedback in both languages).

Required Materials

You need to have a laptop with Photoshop installed and a tablet sensitive to pen pressure (such as a Wacom tablet). Or you need a tablet-computer with Photoshop installed that is sensitive to pen pressure (such as the Cintiq Companion).

Course Outline

Below is the general outline. The detailed 10 week course outline will be communicated to students at a later date.

This course will explore pure concept and workflows to create new interesting concepts to be tailored to games, movies, or published material.

The focus is on blue sky high concept with the objective to push out of your conceptual comfort zone and delve into what makes a concept emotionally provocative. 

During the 10-weeks, you will learn powerful methods of ideation and concept refinement so you can produce two solid concept designs, under the guidance of a senior concept artist that can form the foundation of a high level concept designer’s portfolio.
